Gamle Hellesund
Gamle Hellesund is one of the perls of Norways southcoast
and it is near to Skottevik. People lived in Gamle Hellsund from
1729 on, it has been a tollvillage and an emergency harbour for
sailing ships. In former times Gamle Hellesund had its own
postoffice and schoolhouse.
Ulvøysund
Here you can find the oldest house
in Sørlandet, "Gjestgiveriet" (a pub), which is a little
more than 400 years old. It is the big house on the east side of
Skolebrygga (schoolbridge). This pub is know since 1854. Ulvøysund
is first marked in sailingmaps in 1588. You can find a lot of
wrecks in the waters around Ulvøysund. Today the village is a
popular place for holiday guests.
Høvåg church
The oldest part of this church is build from stones and
dated to the period between 1000-1150. The church has been 10 m
long and had two small windows to the south side. Since then the
church has been rebuilt and reconstructed several times until
todays times. For laying the foundation stone the year
1831 is written in the wing on top of the roof.
Kaldvell area
Only ca. 26 km away from Skottevik, you can find
a superb prepared area for walking, 3 km east of Lillesand town
centre. The river has a salmon ladder, and you can fish or bathe.
The ruins of the wood pulp grinding mill dating from about 1890 are
still visible and provide a magnificent backdrop for the walk.
Kaldvell is also the starting point for what was previously called
Kongeveien, the King's road, between Kaldvell and Landvik. Nowadays
the road is called Vestlandske Hovedvei and is an excellent trail
for both walking and cycling between Lillesand and Grimstad.
Brekkestø
Brekkestø was originally a temporary anchorage, also for
sailing ships laid up for the winter. The story goes that in winter
the ships lay so close to each other that you could cross the sound
without getting your feet wet. In the 18th century guesthouses
appeared at Gaupholmen, on Ullerøya and in Brekkestø. There was
also a distillery and here too was the pilot station with 8 pilots
and 10 pilot apprentices. After artists from Oslo discovered the
paradise that Sørlandet was at the turn of the century, many small
guesthouses were established. This beauty spot is still very well
preserved and is well worth a visit.
Kassenkanalen and Kassetassen
This is a fine smal channel which connects
Isefjærfjorden and Blindleiahe, opened in summer 1995 by the
Minister for the Environment. A beautiful canal providing a new
gateway to a pleasant little trip just beside Blindleia. The
passage is 200 metres. The canal, which was previously an old sea
route, contains a skulpture in the stones right by the bridge
which is called "Kasse-tassen", from an old fairy tale telling
the story of the ghost from Kassenkanal.
Bronseplassen
Bronseplassen ist situated besides RV 401 in Høvåg ca. 10 km away
from Skottevik FerieSenter. Here you can see how people lived
in Bronze Age, a reconstructed farmhouse from 3500 years ago, a so
called longhouse, 25 m long and 8 m broad. You can see where they
cooked their meals, their sleeping places and the places for the
animals they owned. Outside Bonseplassen contains a labyrinth,
grave and offerplace, idylically placed by a small beaver lake.
Sørlandsenter/Avenyen
Sørlandssenteret is a shoppingcenter - ca. 17 km from
Skottevik FerieSenter. Here you find all kinds of stores like
supermarkets, shops, McDonalds, Peppes Pizza and cafees. There
are around 50 shops under the same roof. Avenyen is a new area with
different shops.
Turf fabrication in Tveide (Birkenes)
Located ca. 35 km northeast from Skottevik
FerieSenter in the woods besides an old swamp lies the
turffabrication, an exciting and unique museum. Over 50
years there has been turf produced here. In Birkenes you can allso
see the waterfalls of Hanefossen and Flakkefossen and
some nice bathing places near Teinefossen and
Bersevannet.
Kristiansand Zoo
A really exciting and gorgeous park, which is the most
visited and bestknown in Norway!
Located less than 20 km away from Skottevik it is a wonderful
adventure for the whole family.
The Setesdalsbanen (Setesdaltrain)
is an original steam locomotive which drove between
Kristiansand and Bygland in Setesdal. The train
starts from Grovane railwaystation, which is located north
from Vennesla (ca. 40 km from Skottevik). The tour goes
throught the wonderful Norwegian nature and is a popular attraction
for the whole family.
